They were working up to a few days ago, then in mid documents stopped working. Now they don’t work even when I start a new doc. I’ve tried the fixes suggested here and various places. I’ve even tried starting in ‘safe’ mode on the theory that Grammerly plugin I removed weeks ago might still be affecting things somehow. Using ‘safe’ mode didn’t help either. If “Do not check ” is checked in a new blank document, then open the Language dialog again, clear both check boxes “Detect language automatically” is usually more of a hindrance than a help and making sure that the desired language is selected click Set As Default.

Close that document and quit Word. Open Word with a new blank document and check to see whether the settings have been retained.

If not, it may be that something is preventing the Normal template from being saved. That’s an investigation for another day; for now, you can make the change in Normal directly, as follows:. In that window, type or paste NormalTemplate.
