One of Iron and Wine’s very best and that says a lot! After years of experimenting with a variety of different sounds from different influences on his past few solo records, this album sees Sam Beam return to his roots.
That being said, these songs are not sparse in arrangement by any stretch. Acoustic guitar and piano are beautifully intertwined throughout. The first single, “Call It Dreaming”, is still my favorite song on the record, but they are all in the same vein as this track.
The album is a great piece of art from start to finish. The deluxe vinyl is simply gorgeous packaging, and the bonus tracks are quite good, especially the non-album tracks there’s also 3 demos.
Sub Pop does vinyl better than just about anyone and this is just another example of that. I am happy to say that this is finally a release from one of my favorite artists that definitely lived up to my expectations. Sam Beam has been a personal favorite of mine for coming on 10 years now. Shepards Dog is a top five favorite album for me. As for Beast Epic, I am glad to see Beam going back to a more simplified sound.
Each song on the album is nice to listen to and the lyrics are great. However, there is something missing within the songs. For me, it’s almost as if every song has much more potential to be longer and have more parts without lyrics. It’s as if each song never truly fully delivers. Before listening to the album, I saw multiple reviewers giving it an average of a B. I believe that is a fair assessment of this piece of work. Even as I write this and listening to the album, I must say that I can never truly have an opinion on an album unless I have lived with it and immersed myself in it.
Who knows, maybe a year from now Beast Epic will be a personal favorite of mine. I don’t find it fair to review anything right off the bat. Keep making music Sam! I have wanted this record for awhile, not sure why I had not purchased it yet! Iron and Wine Is one of my favorite bands and I adore this record. I have already listened to it several times she purchasing it a few weeks ago. The lyric booklet insert that comes with this record is amazing. It is made to go along with the embroidery that is on the front cover.
